Fallin’ for Wreckhouse

I was introduced to Wreckhouse Jazz and Blues about five years ago when I worked at Choices for Youth and sat on a committee for the fundraising event, Hot Soup, Cool Jazz. I had just returned home from living in Toronto (where I’d made appearances at its jazz festival since the tender age of 15) and I remember being impressed and proud when I learned that such an organization existed in St. John’s and that we, our humble little city, host an international jazz and blues festival.

The Heart of it All

My admiration for the festival only grew when I learned that its activities and events – especially its flagship, the Wreckhouse International Jazz and Blues Festival, runs largely on the blood, sweat and tears of volunteers. People – busy people who are executives, business owners and others with high-pressured lives – dedicating their “extra” time to bringing this genre of music to the forefront here in our province. We love community-minded people here at Dc Design House. It’s who we are. It’s who we want to spend our time with.

Behind the Curtain

Wreckhouse is an organization that means something to me, so I was obviously super excited a couple of months back when I received the news that we’d be Wreckhouse’s creative partner and sponsor of the 2015 festival. From beautiful branding – highlighting the new time of year for the festival (Fall!), the amazing talent to the creation of a mobile app – it has been a fun, wild ride. I am kind of in disbelief that this week, we’ll be groovin’ to the tunes of a jam-packed five days of jazz and blues. Enter Wreckhouse withdrawal.

Something for everyone

If you don’t have your tickets yet, what are you waiting for? Whether you want to get out in the day with the kids to take in the Munchkin Music workshop or spend the afternoon/into evening with your special gal or dude at a matinee or happy hour show – Wreckhouse is servin’ it up. Maybe you are a musician who wants to learn from some of the festival’s finest, there’s a workshop for that. Jazz jams and afterparties? Yeah, Wreckhouse will have that too. Matt Andersen? Holly Cole? Roger Howse, anyone?
