What’s up by’s? The MayDays have come and gone again and we have had some eye-opening guests come in to shoot the breeze with us here at Rogers Studios on Kenmount Road. May was a month for innovation and inspiration from so many radical people who really show us what this town is made of! Musicians, local talent, young entrepreneurs, and a few people who have some awesome Ideas Worth Sharing! Read on and find out what else came Out of the Fog this month!

Keeping up to date on the going-ons in this city can be hectic, so Co-host of Oz Fm’s Morning Rush, and fellow “fire-hall brat” Stephanie O’Brien dropped by to get us up to date about the crazy-busy year she’s had — having a baby, getting married, and now she’s back at Ozfm killing the Morning Rush again. Of course she told us all about the wicked fundraisers Nevaeh’s Lemonade Stand has been doing — raising over $140,000 for families of children with cancer in NL throughout the past five years!
Lisa Brown of Stella’s Circle Inclusion Choir dropped by to talk about the history of Stella’s Circle, and all amazing things that they continue to do for the community, and Kellie Walsh @ChoirKellie from @ShalliwayMusicNL dropped in to celebrate their 25 year anniversary with us.
What’s after happening now on Out of the Fog?
As an entrepreneur and business owner, I just love when I see young people not only branching out and exploring their own ideas, but absolutely rockin’ it! This city is not running short on talent by any means, and my guests this month really prove that.
Justin Fong from Quidi Vidi Brewing Co. took a jaunt into the Rogers TV studio to talk about the new #CalmTom brews, and his Shave For The Brave experience with the Fogtown Barber boys a few weeks ago! Justin is constantly upgrading things at QV, and has added and expanded to the brewery to not only hold more amounts of beer, but to produce more flavours of beer too! Look for your favourite QV brews, and new QV’s brews at your favourite pub!
We had Ashley Pomeroy, the Youth Ventures Provincial Coordinator come in with some young self-starters who were in the program last summer. Steve Ryan from Convenience Crew Lawn Care, and Maggie Drover from NewfoundLacquer told us all about their lit ideas, and their experience with starting a business through Youth Ventures. Young people like this really restores my faith in our future!
Clare Fowler of Clare Fowler Studios was here for a spell. She makes fabulous clothing and accessories using NL Harp Seal fur. Emily Evans and Lauren Sanders — owners of local clothing line — SALT, and the two gems responsible for coining the absolutely amazing and necessary term #PartySweater— chatted with us about their clothing line, and how it evolved from a photography project. Right? Inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere!
We were also lucky enough to get a #SneakPeek at the June 2 TEDx event with a visit from Samantha Phelan — one of this year’s 6 speakers for Hope Decostructed, Dane Woodland — former TEDx speaker and current coach to Samantha, and Andrew Murphy — Director of Marketing, to talk behind the scenes of TEDx and all the dedication, prep and practice that goes into making TEDx St. John’s so successful every year. Congrats to all of this year’s speakers, and the volunteers who came together to pull off another great event at BMW.
MayDays: Tune in for the music
DJ Lex, and DJ Slim Macho took turns pumping out the jams for us again this month. Jacob Critch, a young emerging singer/songwriter — who actually got into performing music after he started producing beats for local rapper Tony Delicious — came to hang out in the Rogers Studio. Jacob wowed us by playing two of his original songs, “Obsessed”, and “Make you Mine” after we chatted about his RPM challenge, social media, and his new-found place in the spotlight.
The Stella’s Circle Inclusion Choir came by with Lisa Brown to perform their song “If I had a Grant” which is a clever social critique inspired by the song “If I had a Hammer”. Kathy Stock, a young cancer survivor and YACC member blew us away with her beautiful song “Overcome” which she initially wrote for the 2012 TEDx St. John’s: Overcoming Adversity event, and has since become somewhat thematic for her own personal cancer journey.
We were the real Fortunate Ones when Fortunate Ones Music regaled us with their tune, “Before You”, and local singer/songwriter Meghan Waterman gave us a taste from her new EP “3AM Conversations” with her original songs, “Ours”, and “Bad Intentions”, and she discussed the musical artists and genres that helped inspire her new album.
There is seriously never a dull moment here at Out of the Fog. This whole province is completely full of amazing, inspiring, talented people just busting at the seams. I am always amazed by my guests and I can’t thank them enough for dropping by to share their experiences with us.
MayDays will be the last Out of the Fog blog for a bit since we have wrapped for the summer. Catch us again in the fall as we introduce you to some more amazing local talent!
