They’re coming to take me away.
Vacations are hard.
You have to pack for them. They involve travel (time on a plane with not much to do). Oh yes, and you have to actually step outside the happy hurricane that is your life, and trust that the gods of retribution won’t strike you down for trying to Do You for a few; it’s called cherophobia, and I’ve got it bad.
Opportunity Knocks.
I haven’t been away in three years. Where did the time go? Spoiler: I never wonder. Sadly, I never was one for wanderlust. I do like to travel …or at least, I think I did. *sigh*
But then, thanks to a beautiful colleague, the opportunity to take part in an event that combines my love of people and purpose presented itself:
The Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference happens every four years. They select business/community lovers like me from government, private business, not-for-profits and unions; bring us together for a weekend summit, then rocket us across the country for an intensive tour, where we meet everyone and do everything until the climax gala in Ottawa where each provincial team presents a report on that province to the Governor General at the Canadian Museum of History.
Very cool. I admit to not knowing much about this apparent honour, but since I found out I was selected, I’ve met so many accomplished and inspiring alumni who have taken part in what they say is a life-changing experience. Now, life changing sounds like something that might change my life. Time will tell.
Why should you care?
If you’re a member of my volunteer/general business community, I’d like you think: “Geeze, pretty deadly that ol’ Donnie is gonna hop into a powder keg of type-A personalities in attempt to help make our country more successful.” I’d reply with: “Oh you ;)!”
If you’re a client, maybe you could think: “Time away to get fresh and think about my brand on a bunch of levels is a great idea. Everyone wins.” To which I’d return a “It’s all about you, you loyal and patient beauties.”
And if you’re my trusted and much-loved team, I can picture a resounding: “Yes b’y, it’s about time he got da jeziz outta here to give everyone a frikkin’ break!” Which would result in a swift “You just wait ’til I get back. Marathon development cycles for all!” (Add loud crack of thunder for effect.)
See ya da week!
As of the this Friday, May 22nd, after the annual TEDxStJohns event and getting my head shaved for Young Adult Cancer Canada, I’m gonzo. Of course I’ll report back when I return – that is, if I come back at all. Kidding.
While I will try to check in on emails every so often, they told me I’m not allowed to be on my phone at all for the course of this mission. For me, that’s like asking me to hold my breath for two weeks, so please be patient and reach out to Jackson as needed.
I really feel like this is going to be an incredible time for my personal and professional development. Wish me luck and see you all when I return from saving Canada!
Looking forward,
