Music is in our blood here at the design house. We work in a large open room, so headphones are mandatory for zoning in on our work.
Music inspires us here. It drives us, and helps us be more creative. Sitting back and closing your eyes for a second with your favourite tune on, can take your mind away from the problem for a second, and in a lot of cases, spark a solution.
Life at the Design House
Recently a few team members and I created a Google Doc to list our favourites, find new bands, talk about them, and generally connect over shared taste. In the few weeks we’ve been doing it, the document has reached over ten pages of suggestions, youtube links, commentary, and more suggestions.
(Dc: Sidenote, more than half our team play an instrument, sing, and even freestyle rap! *Wink* to Greg!)
Lay down the boogie and play that funky music till you die
Music seems to be in our blood, not just here in the office, but as Newfoundlanders.
In particular, everyone on the east coast of the island has a musical connection. I often visit my in-laws on the west coast and the lack of music always strikes me as so strange.
For me it’s an everyday thing. I grew up on it and it’s a part of who I am. In fact, my parents would attest that as a child I couldn’t sleep without it. Here I am 30 years later and I still can’t get through the day without listening to something. Even while I write this blog I’m listening to Radical Face.
The Complete Discography
I started loving my parents music, bands like The Beatles, Stan Rogers, The Doobie Brothers, and the Steve Miller Band. I evolved into a metal head for a good long phase.
I never had the look of a metal head though, and one System of a Down concert in Toronto with my brother reminded me of that, what with our lack of chains, piercings, black clothing, and tattoos. I spent a long time wrapped up entirely by Metallica, Pantera, System, Tool, and Black Sabbath. Perhaps that’s the angsty teen years, however, in all honesty I still love these bands, they’re just in good company now-a-days.
Down Home Heroes
Funnily enough, the band that opened my eyes to more styles was Newfoundland’s own Hey Rosetta! Their debut album has good rock songs like Yes, Yes, Yes, but they brought more than a distorted guitar to the mix. Soon I was moving into bands like Iron & Wine, Justice, Basia Buiat, and The Heavy. Quickly my musical library went from a few select bands, to dozens if not hundreds, and I’m always looking to collect more.
Many in the office would likely have similar stories to the one I’ve told about myself, but one thing’s for sure, looking around at everyone with their earbuds in, this place runs on music.
