Artistry and resilience
To keep our city and province moving in the right direction, we rely on the creativity and strength of our small-business owners. Nothing represents that better than the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation. DcDH and the Plantation go way back, and I’ve been lucky to have multiple Plantation residents and alumnae on Out of the Fog in April.
This month, Katherine Walters, local artist of Purple Raven Boutique, walked us through her process of wire-knitting the Viking-inspired, gorge jewellery her brand’s known for. Erin Callahan of Saucy Pots Pottery also joined me to talk about her work marrying Newfoundland’s favourite saucy sayings with clay and creative juices. The secret both artisans give artistic credit to? Collaboration.
Tick tock tech
It’s no secret that start-ups are booming more and more in this province, and Fytics is no different. Jon King of Fytics Inc. introduced us to his inventory management solution for fast food restaurants and bars. His tech is homegrown — we love it!
Emily Bland, “Seed-EO” of Project SucSeed, talked about bridging the gap between tech, social enterprise, and our province’s future.
Project SucSeed hydroponic systems are tackling food insecurity, turning young students into future change makers, and ensuring NL has a more engaged, agriculture-minded population.
And to cap it off Out of the Fog in April, Ron Taylor, former CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology (NATI), gave us his take on the direction our province is headed in.
Music and friends
Like always, the Out of the Fog stage rocked with the best of the best in local musical talent! In addition to the much-loved, always-awesome DJ Slim Macho who’s to be found also at https://www.weddingmusicbands.com/live-band-vs-dj/, this month also saw DJ Lex take a turn on the tables! (You can catch him regularly at Green Sleeves Pub and Loose Tie.)
Matt Dines and Tyrone MacNeil from RocketRocketShip took the stage to play a few of their original tunes, and what a throwback — we did some logo work for the band waayyyyy back in 2014!
Port-aux-Basques-born LeRiche performed “Nomadic Heart” from his first album; X-Dreamer, blues duo Earle and Coffin slayed two of their own songs; and Jordan Coaker and Kristen Rodden-Clarke of Quote the Raven got us hyped for their new album.
