The holidays are over and we’re ready to kill it in 2018! If you ended 2017 all caught up on Out of the Fog, you’ve seen it all in local shopping, organizations, and music. And if you haven’t, lemmie fill you in!
Local love
The A1C is no stranger to local biz love, and last month on OOTF was no different. I got to sit down with travellin’ fashion queen Mari-Lynn, CEO and owner of Model Citizens, a store that is now happily back home on Duckworth St. Chris Hollett, proud new owner of Jiffy Cabs and Empire West Auto Pro, also stopped by to share his experience on, in his words, being “baptized by fire” in the business world. What entrepreneurs and storytellers these two are!
About town
We brought St. John’s best in nightlife to the Masonic Theatre, with Brent McNamara of Brent Mac Events, an event planning and promotions company that’s been partying for almost 10 years, and the always entertaining Donny Love of Big Jib Productions. Sheldon O’Neill, locally famed mixologist, also joined me to sample some delish Canadian-made spirits. For years Sheldon’s been mixing cocktails all over the city, from Basho, Raymonds, and Spirit of Newfoundland, to the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation, and St. John’s Fish Exchange. (You gotta try his lychee cocktail!)
On the board
And in community news, Jane Henderson, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. John’s, caught us up on what’s happening in the nonprofit world. This group is close to my heart, and they do it all for youth in our community including dinners, after school programs — you name it!
One of December’s musical guests, Hot x Proxy, is super close with the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. John’s, and, if you haven’t already, check out the uhhhhhmazing video they put together for the group.
Other musical guests included 2017 MusiclNL award nominee Ian Foster and Rube and Rake, whose debut album Back and Forth has been described as a “product [that] is enriched because of the honest creative spirits.” And man, is it incredible!
Tune in next time
To get the full scoop on the St. John’s food and drink scene, the newcomers in the music industry, and everything else I’ve covered this month on Out of the Fog, find the episodes online at Rogers TV. And don’t forget to tune in every Thursday on Channel 9! Get in touch for more details.
BTW: We’re always down to have people swing by to sit in on a taping of the show. If you wanna check it out, drop me a line: Dc@dcdesignhouse.ca
